Practical Fridays

Practical Fridays was a workshop series, founded and coordinated by artist Philip Matesic from 2013 until 2019. The series expanded practically on Theory Tuesdays, a nonacademic platform for theoretical discussion. Instead of discussing a theoretical text, participants had a hands-on, collective experience of learning something practical from a non-professional. Each workshop was run by a different person at various locations in Zurich, Switzerland.

“How To Make Berliners” with Philip Matesic

For this international edition of Practical Fridays, Philip Matesic workshopped “How To Make Berliners” at the Berlinische Galerie as part of the one day festival “Out Now! Art in Public Space” on September 15, 2018.

The workshop lasted a total of six hours. A group of ten participants prepared four batches of dough at the beginning of the workshop. After letting the dough rise, it was then formed by a larger number of participants into the Berliner forms. There was then another waiting period for the dough to rise. Finally the Berliners were ready to be deep fried. Due to safety reasons, Philip Matesic was the only one allowed to deep fry the Berliners. But afterwards each participant who wanted to eat a Berliner was allowed to fill their own with Hagenbuttermark, cover in powder sugar and enjoy. A total of sixty four Berliners were consumed.

The Berlinische Galerie is one of the newest museums in the German capital and collects art from Berlin dating from 1870 to the present day – with both a local and international focus.

    “Suturing” with Brian

During this Practical Fridays, Brian lead a suturing workshop. He reviewed common suture techniques used to close a wound, using various materials and tools. Each participant then practiced these techniques individually on a pig’s foot.

“Suturing – Surgical stitching to close a wound or incision or to approximate parts. Suturing may be continuous or by separated stitches (interrupted suturing) and may employ absorbable sutures, such as collagen or catgut, or non-absorbable sutures that may have to be removed.” -Collins Dictionary of Medicine

“How To Become A Better Listener” with Agnès Thöni

During this Practical Fridays workshop, Agnès Thöni taught everyone how to become a better listener.

Listening is not just hearing: to listen to someone means paying attention and making a conscious effort to process what you hear. But it also goes further than that. A good listener is not just good at listening but also at showing that he is listening. By making the speaker feel that she is being listened to, he is encouraging him to talk, bringing the conversation to a deeper level. This is often called active listening. We practiced, through several exercises, our capacity to pay attention and to actively listen.
